Women of Steel - Documentary Screening & Panel Discussion - 45 Years On

Presented by: Women Illawarra in collaboration with the film director of Women of Steel, Robynne Murphy.

Don’t miss this opportunity to witness an important chapter in local history and join the conversation about justice and equality today.

Join us for a special screening of Women of Steel, a powerful Australian documentary that tells the inspiring story of a group of determined women who fought for the right to work in Wollongong’s steel industry. Spanning 14 years, their struggle against BHP in the 1980s is a testament to perseverance, comradeship, and the pursuit of equality.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of the Tent Embassy outside the Steelworks, when the campaign for Jobs for Women began. The screening will be followed by a brief panel discussion featuring the film's director Robynne Murphy and original Women of Steel featured in the film. This is a chance to reflect on the historic fight and its lasting impact on gender equality and workers' rights.

Celebrate the strength of these women, honour their legacy, and be inspired by their relentless pursuit of justice and equality.

Step and Connect

STEP AND CONNECT on Tuesday June 3!

Together we will embark on a walk along the beach footpath and share questions, advice and knowledge to learn and grow together.

Walk with us on the final date of Reconciliation Week. We will begin out time together by reading the story books from Coomaditchie United Aboriginal Corporation, then walk and talk about the strengths, artworks, beauty and connection. Facilitated by Lillian, one of Women Illawarra's community development workers. Bring your own questions or feel free to listen in, stay on topic or wander as your heart desires.

We will start at 1.30pm at Women Illawarra, 170 Corrimal Street Wollongong, and after a chat we will go on a walk along the beach footpath. There will be a range of points along the way for you to turn around if you wish.

You are welcome to come along for a simple cuppa and opt out of the walk, if you prefer. The choice is yours.

Step and Connect is FREE, and any woman-identifying person is welcome to show up unannounced on the day, however we do appreciate if you register your interest by emailing Lillian@womenillawarra.org.au or calling 4228 1499.
